July 25, 2011: A Little Late to the Potter Party

CURRENTLY READING: Life by Keith Richards and Swamp Angel by Ethel Wilson
-3,919 PAGES

Seeing how I’m the last person on the planet to read Swamp Angel I figure it’s also time to see what all the fuss is about Harry Potter. I read the first one years ago, saw a couple of the movies, and decided that while it was entertaining for a certain age group, it really wasn’t for me. Never gave it another thought.

Fast-forward to last weekend, which we spent with our almost-12-year-old niece from Vancouver. An avid fantasy fiction fan, she could hardly wait to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. We had planned all kinds of things to do and see with her in Toronto, which she politely endured, but all the while she was desperate to hit the local IMAX to see the finale of the series that has captivated her for the past decade. On Saturday night we gave in, and armed with her very animated briefing of the plot of the first six and a half books, we strapped on our 3D glasses and settled in. And it was AWESOME.

Call me a total sucker, a pawn in the big Hollywood marketing machine’s game, but I’ve now ordered a box set of the series and plan to read it from the beginning. First to myself and then out loud to my kids. Can I count the pages twice?
