January 14, 2011: Book Club Discussion – Room

PAGES READ: 50
YEAR TO DATE: 708
CURRENTLY READING: An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin and Netherland by Joseph O’Neill
BOOKS COMPLETED: 1

At book club last night we (briefly) discussed Room by Emma Donoghue, one of my favourite reads of 2010. This particular book club (one of two that I belong to) isn’t particularly bookish. It’s more about wine, celebrity gossip, parenting war stories, relationship advice, style commentary, TV show recaps and general catching up than it is about books. Room generated a flurry of last-minute conversation as we were putting on our coats and realized that we had forgotten to discuss the book. Of those who had read it (which was half the group), the consensus was: creepy and good and well worth reading. This book club is populated by intelligent, well-read, articulate women, but analyzing and discussing the books at length just isn’t our thing. And that’s fine with me.
